A Family Affair

Rico Harvey, my 27 year old Son, in whom I'm well pleased. My mother, Mamie Harvey whom you can see is a beautiful queen. She is the queen and she knows it! She has every right to be as proud as a peacock. Moma has nine children. I will tell you about them after introducing the picture. Me in the center, Pat and Rickey Jr., my 18 year old son, in whom I'm well pleased also! Ok. Doris is my oldest sister, a Nurse, Fay is second, Nurse, then Morris, Electrician, Pat, Administrator, Joby-Teacher, Debra-Homemaker, Michael-County Commissioner, Cookie-Teacher.; and of course my mother's Best child lives in Rochester! (smile)

Sitting With My Mentors

Young Preachers today dont have what we had coming up and what we yet have in ministry and that's the older cats to council us and give good sound advice as we travel along this pastoral, preaching, singing journey! I thank God for men like Reverend Melvin Rodgers and Reverend Melvin Charles Smith who have always been there for me! Young Cats if you dont have someone to mentor you, then I suggest that you find someone! These are my guys along with Reverend James Netters, J. Alfred Smith Sr, who are not pictured! Reverend Rodgers has pastored New Bethel Baptist Church for 35+ years.. Reverend Smith has pastored Mount Moriah East Baptist Church for 40+ years!

Rocking in Memphis

The Memphis Harmonizers and I had a moment together last Sunday night! It was great and the people love it when we get together! I traveled with them on a six city tour last year and we rocked Las Vegas, San Diego, Compton, Los Angeles, and some 2 other cities on the West Coast! It was a good tour. I promised that I would never do it again.. Those days are behind me! My first love is in Rochester now and I'm committed to it! I hear that they are booked in Rochester in March, I may join them here and hit a number or two with them! This stuff is too addictive, you have to stay away in order to stay away! I guess I'm glad that my addiction is singing and preaching! Amen, Hallelujah, Thank you Jesus!

My Sister; Patricia Scales

My Sister Patricia Scales; a member of Saint Paul Baptist Church in Memphis where I served that congregation for a decade as Senior Pastor was kind enough to purchase an angel ticket for the Barack Obama Inauguration Celebration sponsored by Mount Olivet Baptist Church. Among the many people who supported this event, I personally thank you Pat. Y'all Pat and her husband, Richard (I will tell you about Richard later) are very much responsible for me being the person that I am in ministry! Many years ago when they were stationed in Port Hueneme, California (Just North of Los Angeles) and attending the Evangelistic Bapist Church, they initiated an invitation from the church and then pastor, the Late Doctor Albert Southall for me to come and preach the youth day in 1980 something... a long time ago! Smile! It was my first flight, first preaching engagement out of the tri-state area and first recording and first "hit"! Dont act like you dont know what "Hit" means! I preached a sermon, "A Midnight Prayer Will Work" and Baby the Lord showed up some kinda big! When I returned to Memphis it was blasting all over the radio stations that Rickey Harvey had been to Los Angeles and hit! Whatever! The Gospel DJs got the recorded sermon and played it repeatedly on the radio and calls starting coming in from everywhere. In those days, people invited you to preach your hit sermon! Ok; got the gist of it? This could get long; all I'm trying to say is I will never forget how my sister and brother-in-law served as a instrument in my ministry in the early days.... So Thank you Pat for sending the money for the Angel ticket.. Your support and love means far more to me than the ticket purchase. We are sending you a ticket (keep sake) program, Barack Obama Cup, and yes will send you our 2009 Church Calendar! Hopefully you will attend my Installation 1st Sunday in May and my wonderful Church family will get to meet you! Much Love; Your Baby Brother! Oh, Thanks for being at Church Sunday night in Memphis.... That was good....

Memphis Tennessee

My Sunday traveling experience was something! First, the family and I got up early so that I could get to my Church, Mount Olivet Baptist; and see as many of my babies as I possibly could, make sure service would go fine, etc.. and that was great! I got to the airport at 11:15 for my 12:00 flight that was scheduled to get me to Memphis at 4:15pm for the Memphis Super Sunday Service in which I would be up to bring the message about 5:30 or so! As it turns out, my plane didnt leave Rochester until well after 1:30... Long story short, I didnt get to Memphis until 6:20 and it was almost 7:00 when I got to the church! Folks had been there since 2:00pm. (I have to tell you about Super Sunday; Its Church all day! Singing and preaching with best choirs and preaching all day long. Good food served, people coming and going all the day long! Generally, its the week before the Super Bowl. I did tell them that I would not return next year because we will have our own Super Sunday in Rochester ) Memphis stayed there and waited on me! I Got out of the car, going straight to the pulpit and was up to preach within 10 minutes of arrival! People whom I had not seen in over 25 years were there to hear me! And, the Lord was good. My minister of muisc, Damien Savage who has traveled with me for the last 15 years was with me, and it was on! Listen at this and I'm gone. Its 45 degrees here and its colder than 45 degrees in Rochester. Rochester's 45 degrees is like a Spring Day... Here it has that wet, cold feeling... When I lived in Tucson and folks asked me about the heat, I told them it was a different kind of heat, Now living in Rochester, when folks ask me about how I'm handling the cold, I tell them "Fine, Its a different kind of cold." and it is.. I guess you have to live in those different elements to understand what I'm talking about! Hey, I had some of Moma's spaghetti, green beans, roast beef, potatoes and carrots, cornbread, and sweet potato pie, and several glasses of Memphis water. Oh yeah, this is the only place in America where I drink the water from the hydrant. I guess thats what you call it. Well, I have quite a bit of business to take care of today. Folks think that we're all settled because Rochester is going so well.. Not so.. and pray for us that these houses sell...and No! I dont ever want rental properties again... especially in a city in which I do not live! Its not fun anymore! Cya!

Mid Winter Board Trip Off

To President William Shaw, and to the hundreds maybe thousands of folks that I would have been preaching to this morning, at the National Baptist Convention Mid Winter Board Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee at the Baptist World Center, and to the Preachers whom I would be fellowshipping with both today and tomorrow, I Blog now to ask for your forgiveness for my not coming to Nashville today. I am not totally sure why I am not going. Im not even sure if you believe or understand how the Spirit works with other individuals or not, but I woke up in plenty of time, finished my message for this afternoon, packed my luggage, and was prepared to leave, and the Spirit summoned me not to travel today. The last time this happened to me I was in the airport on my way to Orlando, Florida. I don't question it; rather I simply obey! Thus, I will not be in Nashville today. I will not be speaking for the Mid Winter Board and I am sorry for any inconveniences this may have caused! To my driver who was prepared to pick me up at the airport and rush me through the traffic to get to the World Center, Thank you too! Excerpts from the Mission Message that I would have preached are attached!
The Mission of the Church
Ephesians 1:22-23
The Church is the habitation of God through the Holy Spirit, with divine appointments for the fulfillment of the Great Commission. Each and every believer, or Christian, is an integral part of the church and has been given directives (orders) from our General and Chief Commander, God. We were not been redeemed to fill up a space on a pew.We were not been redeemed to escape the fires of damnation. We were not been redeemed just to bear the name of Christ. We were not been redeemed just to be carriers of the Holy Spirit. WE HAVE BEEN REDEEMED FOR A PURPOSE! That purpose is the mission of the church. As some might think, it is not a "mission impossible"; it is a "mission possible" through the power of the Holy Spirit. We must Exalt the Savior, Lift him up, Edify the Saints, Encourage one another, Brothers keeper, and Evangelize the Sinner, win the Lost to Jesus. We have been entrusted by God with much, and to whom much is given, much is required. God pours His spirit into us that we might become not just carriers of this gospel, but sharers of the word. God has purposed for us to: To seek and to save that which is lost, To worship Him and Him only, To build a body of believers in the image of Christ, The Mission of the Church is to: To be an agency of God for evangelizing the world.Evangelism is not to get the word out, but to let the word out.Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. The mission of the church is to A corporate body in which man worships God.You can tell where a person is with God by watching the way they worship.God has become the center of our affection. You got to love to praise Him, You got to love to lift your hands to him, You got to love to lift my voice to Him, You got to love to sing to Him,The Question is not "Do you have a voice?” The Question is “Do you have a song?”Psalm 40:3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.Has the Lord put a song in your heart?Has the Lord put a praise on your lips?Has the Lord put a shout in your voice?Has the Lord put a dance in your feet?Has the Lord put a clap in your hands?A shout, praise, shout, dance, clap, the all make noise, let’s make some noise in here. We need to worship Him!
Jehovah Adoni – Almighty,
Jehovah Shalom – our peace,
Jehovah Ropheka – our healer,
Jehovah Tsidkeenu – our righteousness,
Jehovah Jireh – our provider,
Jehovah Nissi – our banner,
Jehovah Shammah – the present God
. Take a moment and worship Him right now! The mission of the church is to be an agency of God for evangelizing the world, The mission of the church is to be an agency of God for evangelizing the world, to worship God. When Jesus called the twelve disciples he said to them, “Follow me and I will make you to be fishers of men.”Becoming a Christian does not make you a disciple; you are a disciple when you begin to reproduce yourself. A Story about Lobsters goes here, that I will not share at this time simply because I have not preached it yet, it would have been fresh off the press in Nashville today.. After I have preached it, I will return to the Blog and include it! Oh, Its a mean piece, trust me! :-) After the story, I would have been closing well with the following piece! (smile)
Tell the World, that He lives,
Tell the World, that He's alright,
Tell the World, I found a Savior, He's sweet I know,
Tell the World, that He's a good God,
He's a wonderful Savior,

Emotional Wreck

I am literally an emotional wreck today...So many wonderful things are happening in between Washington DC and Rochester, New York and with Mount Olivet and I'm just about to explode. My church doesn't know how I cry and I am doing well keeping my tears back but its getting harder as the days go by! It was so emotional watching our first African American man just a couple of years older than me, take oath for the Oval Office. How do you feel? Are you too in tears? Wow! Then, it has been quite moving to receive the reception from not only Mount Olivet but the city of Rochester.. The phone and emails have not stopped ringing...On top of that... The Inauguration Celebration that Mount Olivet is sponsoring at the Hyatt tonight is sold out... They brought me the finished program and I just lost it! Its absolutely beautiful. I have some of the most, if not the most, capable group of people who can take a generalized vision with minimum supervision and bring it into a reality within a given timeframe. This group of people (Mount Olivet Church Family) is what I needed, and I'm moved even more each time they tell me that I'm what they needed and we all know that without God we can do nothing, but with Him all things are possible. I'll see you at the Hyatt tonight.... If you were fortunate enough to get a ticket. If not; I'll see you when I see you!

National Baptist Convention

I will speak on Wednesday for the National Baptist Convention Mid Winter Board meeting in Nashville. This event will require your prayers.. It looks like one speech after another, Jewish Synagogue, MLK Jr Day, and Wednesday, NBC USA Inc speech. Now the interesting thing is, the flight lands at 9am and the service starts at 9am. I hope a few things. One, that the flight is on time, two, that the driver in Nashville is on time, three, that they get happy in the praise and worship piece and take their time so I will at least have a minute to breath upon arrival. I have been asked to serve as Keynote Speaker for the 30 year old Super Sunday Service at Mount Moriah East Baptist Church for Dr. Melvin Charles Smith at 7pm Sunday night. I will be glad to get to Memphis to check on my family and properties. Except for the timing, this works out very good for me! I have a couple of more speaking engagements this month, like in Senatobia Mississippi on a Tuesday night and Buffalo, New York on a Saturday morning. I hope that some of the men from my church will accompany me to Buffalo. Blue and Wade, smile! February comes and the schedule slows down tremendously! Just pray that the Spirit of the Lord is with me each time I stand, and that I never stand for personal gain or fame, but to share the engrafted Word of God and to either win or encourage some soul in the faith!

MLK Jr Speech

One comes to mind today who influenced, affected, impacted, our lives tonight in the person of Martin Luther King Jr. An African American Minister, Preacher, Pastor A Prominent Leader of the civil rights movement-50’s and 60’s A man with magnified speaking abilities, A man whose eloquent pleas won the support of millions, A recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize - Nonviolent demonstrations. Author of 4 books, A man whose life began in Atlanta, Georgia in 1929, A man whose life ended in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968, One quarter of a mile from the 501 Pontotoc Apartment C, which is the place where we lived in those days. I still remember, standing down the stairs on the porch of our apartment and holding on to my Moma’s leg, while hundreds by the multiplied hundreds of black men and black women, white men and white women marched in front of our house. The Memphis Sanitation Strike 1968. They were striking because of years of poor treatment, They were striking because of discrimination, They were striking because of dangerous working conditions, In those days they were called Garbage Men, and the Black Garbage men had to empty Garbage in tin cans and carry the cans on thier heads, and while on their heads the garbage would run down their heads, and necks, and bodies. Two Memphis garbage collectors, Echol Cole and Robert Walker, were crushed to death by a malfunctioning truck. 1300 black sanitation workers walked off the job in protest. Martin Luther King, Jr. led the March, King considered not returning to Memphis, but decided that if the nonviolent struggle for economic justice was going to succeed it would be necessary to be there. He spoke to a crowd of dedicated sanitation workers who had braved another storm to hear him. A weary King preached about his own mortality, telling the group, “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life--Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now… I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land” He spoke words of exhortation, words of inspiration, words of consolation, words of encouragement.
Martin, Like Abraham, Like Moses, Like Joshua, like David was a man that we remember because of the unique way in which God used him. Martin Luther King, Jr. was concerned about his people, and he recognized all of God’s children as his people, he was concerned about the welfare of little black boy’s and little black girl’s, injustice and freedom. Martin stood in Washing DC in 1963 to give his famous “I have a dream” speech. He said then to the crowd of more than 1 million Blacks and Whites, that the Emancipation Proclamation was signed four score years ago. That decree came as a beacon light of hope for millions of Negro slaves, who had been seared in the flames of injustice. King said the Emancipation Proclamation came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.
But to King’s dismay, 100 years later, Negroes still were not free, 100 years later, the lives of the Negro was still sadly crippled by segregation and the chains of discrimination. 100 years later, the Negro was still languaged in the corners of the American Society. And King went to that hallowed spot in Washington, to remind the Negroes to remind Americans the urgency of now. Sounds like many writers of the Holy Writ, who yet reminds you and me alike of the urgency of Now. King had a way with Nows, King’s Nows reminds me of the Apostle Paul’s Nows. King said, Now, is the time to Rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sun lit paths of justice. King said, Now, is the time to bring justice to all of God’s children. King said, Now, is the time to lift our theme in which we stand for racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. King said, even though we face the difficulty of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream that’s rooted deeply in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. Jacob said, I laid down one night, I took stones for pillows, fell asleep, and I had a dream. I dreamed, I saw a ladder set up on the Earth, and the top of it reached to heaven, and I dreamed I saw Angels ascending and descending. King had dreams, He dreamed that sons of slaves and sons of former slave owners would be able to sit down at the table of brotherhood. He dreamed that prejudice states of injustice would be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice, He dreamed that his four little children would one day live in a Nation where they would not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. King had a dream, He dreamed that one day black boys and black girls would be able to join hands with white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. King had a dream, He dreamed that every valley would be filled, Every mountain and hill would be made low, The crooked made straight, The rough ways would be made smooth King had Paul Like qualities, King had Isaiah like qualities, King had Jacob like qualities, King had Faith like Abraham, King told the crowd, “I’m going home with Faith, With this Faith, “We will be able to hue out the mountain of despair, a song of life.” With this Faith, “We will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a symphony of brotherhood.” With this Faith, “We will be able to” Struggle together, Go to jail together, Stand up for freedom together.” Faith in God will see you through your struggle, Faith in God will help you in your physical and spiritual jail. Today, We celebrate the Life of Martin Luther King Jr, We celebrate the life of the man who had a dream, We celebrate the life of the man who gave his life for freedom, Tomorrow, We celebrate the reality of the dream, We celebrate Barack Obama, We celebrate a man who was not judged by the color of his skin, a man who was not judged by his church or his preacher, a man who was not judged by his friends or his enemies, We celebrate a man who was judged by the content of his character, We celebrate a man who is judged by his education and preparation, by his message of hope, by his message of change, by his message to the Nation, "Yes we can" Today, Its Martin Luther King Jr, Tomorrow, Its Barack Obama, The day after, It's Education Reform, It's Guantanamo Bay, It's the War in Iraq, It's the Stimulus Plan, It's the Failing Economy, It's the Trillion Dollar Deficit, It's the Plummeting Employment, It's the 350 Billion Dollars of Bailout,

My Daughter is There

Temple B'rith Kodesh

Excerpts from my message at Temple Brith Kodesh, the largest Synagogue in Rochester. This message was given January 16th at 8:00pm. My choir was there and they bellowed two of the finest and most befitting selections ever for an Interfaith Service. They are by far one of the best choirs ever! The word often used to describe them is "Professional" They are, yet spirit filled.
There are huge redwood trees in California and they are amazing,
They are the largest living things on earth,
They are the tallest trees in the world.
Some of them are 300 feet high,
Some of them are more than 2,500 years old,
They don’t have tremendous root systems, reaching down hundreds of feet into the earth.
Redwoods have a very shallow root system.
The roots of these trees are, however, intertwined.
They are tied in with each other; interlocked.
They are linked, joined together,
They are connected and interconnected,
When the storms come, the redwoods still stand,
When the winds blow the redwoods still stand,
With an interlocking root system they support and sustain each other. They need one another to survive. So do we!God has given us His Temple,
God has given us His Church,
We are bound together in a community of faith.
We are linked, joined together through Him,
We are connected and interconnected,
When the storms come, the Temple still stands,
When the winds blow the Church still stands.
Belonging to God, we belong to each other.
Fellowship with God means fellowship with each other.
God has made us a family, a community of faith.
We have a God-given support system.
Times were tough and persecution was rampant.
People had to deal with Discouragement,
There were Temptations, There was Apathy,
There was Temptations,
There was Sin, but;
The early believers were bound together into a fellowship,
The early believers were bound together through community,
They needed each other;
There is strength in togetherness,
There is strength in unity,
There is strength in love,
There is strength in fellowship,

God has not left us on our own to run this race,
God has not left us alone to fight the battle.
He has given us each other.
We are commanded in Hebrews 10:25 not to, “…GIVE UP MEETING TOGETHER, AS SOME ARE IN THE HABIT OF DOING, BUT LET US ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER….” God has a purpose for putting us together. Henri Nouwen points out,
“We are unified by our common weaknesses,
our common failures, our common disappointments and our common inconsistencies.”
God used this community of faith to do powerful things in the lives of countless believers, living in a pagan, godless world. God’s plan hasn’t changed.
He still desires to use His People to do powerful things in our lives.
The Faith Community is crucial to our spiritual well-being.
God desires that we find strength for the journey,
We face the inevitable trials, We face the inevitable troubles and inevitable tragedies of life on this sin-marred earth, God intends that we be supported, strengthened, encouraged and empowered through the community of believers.
As we face the storms and temptations of life we must receive strength from each other. Such is God’s plan. When we are overwhelmed by trials, heartaches and the burdens of life we, must be strengthened and encouraged by fellow believers.
When we wonder if God really does love us and care for us we need God’s people.
When we are loved and cared for by another believer, especially during painful times, we gain a new sense of God’s love at work. We cannot afford to stand alone; to go it on our own.
In Leadership magazine, Carl Conner writes about the dangers of standing alone.
A few winters ago, heavy snows hit North Carolina.
Near the highway stood several large groves of tall pine trees.
The branches were bowed down with the heavy snow - so low that branches from one tree were leaning against branches of another.
Where trees stood alone, the effect of the heavy snow was different. The branches had become heavier and heavier. Since there was no trees to lean against, the branches snapped. They lay on the ground, dark and alone in the cold snow. When the storms of life hit, we need to be standing close to other Believers. We need each other; we can’t stand alone. The closer we stand in community, The more we will be able to hold up.
A group of porcupines were marooned one bitter cold night in the middle of a large frozen field. There was no way to escape the biting wind.
They could not borrow into the frozen ground.
As they huddled together to keep warm, their sharp quills began to pinch and hurt.
The closer they moved together, the more the pain increased. Some of the animals could not bear the pain and drew apart to sleep alone. In the morning they had frozen to death. In our humanness there are times when we hurt each other and the tendency is to pull away and go it alone. We must resist that tendency. We were created for community.
The journey of life and faith is often trying, difficult and painful.
Discouragement. Relentless temptation. Debilitating sins. Doubts.
Ridicule. Burdensome weaknesses. Heavy burdens. Unanswered questions.
Little wonder God has given us the family of God and the fellowship of believers. It is an absolutely essential source of strength and guidance.

God is Calling Us #2

David becomes king of Israel,
He moves the capital city to Jerusalem.
The call of God was upon the David's life.
Israel had been engulfed in a civil war.
King Saul was dead,
Saul's last surviving relative, was Ish-bosheth,
Ish-bosheth means Man of shame, (do right, in this life)
Ish-bosheth was the first in line to Saul's throne,
Ish-bosheth was the second king of Israel
Ish-bosheth was proclaimed king over Israel by Abner,
the captain of Saul's army
Ish-bosheth lost the loyalty of his own military chief, Abner,
Abner went secretly over to David's cause after being accused by Ish-bosheth of sleeping with one of Saul's concubines. (Drama)
In the process of mobilizing support for David's cause,
Abner was slain by his rival, Joab.
Ish-bosheth is assassinated by two of his own captains.
God had chosen David to be king of Israel.
God had called David to be king of Israel.
All of us have a calling upon our life!
God CALLED David.
He's chosen David to be the king.
The leaders of Israel said, in verse 2 of our passage, “It was you who led out and brought in Israel.” David had been a great warrior and leader during the times that Israel was having skirmishes with their neighbors.
Verse 10, “And David became greater and greater,
for the Lord, the God of hosts, was with him.”
God placed his call on the life of David,
and he remained with him. God CALLS us Like David,
God also places his call on our lives.
we are called to several things.
We are called to repentance, to the service of God.
We are called to be our Brother's keeper,
We are called to walk circumspectly,
We are called to love God and others,
We are called to a holy life.
We are called to work; while its day,
We are called to let our light so shine,
We are called to make a joyful noise unto the Lord,
We are called to resist the devil,
We are called to try the spirit, and see....
We are called to love the Lord thy God,
We are called to make a difference,
The call of God is on all who are His followers.
We all have the call of God on our lives.
It’s not always easy to follow the call of God for our lives.
Sometimes we have to struggle with ourselves before we can embrace God’s call on our life.
All of Israel recognized the CALL of God on David’s life.
verse 2, “And the Lord said to you,
‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over Israel.’”
God called David to be their king.
God had empowered David to be a mighty warrior.
They knew that God had called him.
Verse 3, “So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.”
There are areas in life in which you have been anointed,
Anointed to encourage,
Anointed to bless others,
Anointed to teach, preach,

Anointed to sing, administrate, organize,
Anointed to work behind the scenes,
Anointed to bring together, pick-up,
That anointing is like a burning... that won't let you hold your peace.
It's that anxiety, that uneasiness, that burden, that pull,
that keeps tugging at your heart, mind, spirit, and soul.
Have you sensed a tug lately?
Have you sensed that God is tugging at you lately?
Have you found yourself burdened by an anointing that God has put on your life,
a calling to this, a passion for that?
God Called David,
God is Calling Us,

Some of the most talented choirs and quartets in America are guests in these services and its a high honor to serve as Keynote speaker. First, because of the magnitude of the event, and secondly, because its home, and scripture teaches that a Prophet is without honour in his own country; so I'm extremely humbled having this honour bestowed upon me!

The Favor of God

The favor of God is amazing! It causes you to endure things that the normal person can not handle. It is the blessings of God upon you. It causes angels to move for you and doors that were closed to open for you, its the hands of God lovingly working with you, I pray that the favor of God would work with you like never before today and forevermore and may "the Lord bless you and keep you--the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you; the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace."

God is Calling Us

As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
Jesus was so different, so unique, so exceptional, distinctive in his love for humanity. He seemed to care about people nobody else cared about.Jesus would even talk to people who were out of control. He would minister to people whom other folks would avoid. Jesus loved all people — and liked all people.
Jesus enjoyed humanity,
Jesus enjoyed people,
Jesus enjoyed fellowship,
Jesus somehow saw the value and beauty in the worst of people.
And in the best of us; there is some ugly,
And in the worst of us; there is some beauty.
God is calling us from Sitting,
Matthew was sitting,
Sitting is just not good for you!
You cant effectively be God’s child, just sitting.
You cant effectively win souls to Jesus Christ, just sitting,
You cant effectively share your testimony, just sitting,
You cant really worship God in the beauty of Holiness, sitting,
There is a staleness that goes with sitting,
There is a boredom that goes with sitting,
Three is a pain that goes with sitting,
There is a wear-out that goes with sitting,
There is a weariness that goes with sitting,
God is Calling us from Sitting
God is calling us from Situations,

Matthew was at the Tax Collectors Booth,
Tax collectors, "publicans" were not numbered among the poor.
Wealth is not bad as long as its earned wealth, or inherited wealth, or as a gift, but wealth that comes on the backs of poor people is Wrong Wealth, Ungodly Wealth, Blood Wealth.
And God is Calling us From Situations,
Situations that hinders our witness,
Situations that hinders our worship,
Situations that hinders our work,
Situations that hinders our faith,
Situations that hinders our faithfulness,
situations that hinders our following,
.....he saw Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth and said, "Follow me,"
and Matthew got up and followed him.
God is Calling us from Sitting,
God is calling us from Situations,
God is Calling us from Sin,

He says, Matthew, Follow me,
Rickey Harvey, Follow me,
and whatever your name is, Jesus says, Follow me...
God is calling us From Sin...
And, he's calling us to call others from sin,
and to usher them into a saving relationship with Him,
He's calling us to call people who are in sin, who are sin-sick,to come out of darkness, to turn to Jesus, to relinquish their ways, and to give their lives to Christ
God is calling us to Shadow Him,
God is calling us to Serve Him,
God is calling us to Stir up your gift.

A Second TV Taping

Hey folks.... I got a call today. Another TV taping has been set for next week. One is Wednesday of this week and one is January twelve live at one of the network stations. I will let you know when I have full details and maybe you can watch it on TV. That's pretty cool huh!

The Tooth is Gone!

I have been sleeping most of the day since getting the tooth extracted. Though I had a rough holiday season with it; I have been sleep deprived for days due to the pain.. As you can see; sleeping is not my problem today! I'm good now! My amateur paparazzi follows me around the house as you can see! I'm tryin to keep the meds going on schedule because I hate pain.... Dr. Rodney Oconnor, 521 Beeham Rd off Chili Avenue, had that tooth out of my mouth so fast this morning it was unbelievable. One, he did what I asked him to do and didnt try to sell me a huge bill of services. I knew that the tooth needed extracting, I had had several opinions and was simply following up on other Dentist recommendations and looking for relief from a week long of excruciating pain. Dr Oconnor xrayed immediately and found there fingings to be true and was in accord with them. He commenced to deadening the tooth and was soon ready to extract. I told Dr. Oconnor that I didnt think my mouth was numb enough for the extracting; Numb it some more... LOL.. He said, "Let me check." In a few minutes or so the tooth was out, socket was packed, and I was out! I guess it was numb, while I felt the manuevering in my mouth, I did not and have not felt any pain! This Dentist is the wonderful. He is for sure my Rochester Dentist and I join the many folks in Rochester in recommending Dr. Rodney Oconnor to any person in need of dental work. He is an African American Dentist with a very clean, classy, and very professional suite and staff. He's very gentle, listens to the patient, make sure that you are comfortable, makes recommendations as needed, gets you in and gets you out! Too, he is an active member of the Memorial AME Zion Church!

Rochester Newspaper

Wouldn't you know that I'm in the Democrat and Chronicle Newspaper today? That's like the Commercial Appeal in Memphis or the Arizona Daily Star in Tucson. I have the distinguished honor of being the keynote speaker for the 24th Annual Community-Wide Interfaith Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Celebration here in Rochester on Monday, January 19th at 8:45am at the Eastman Theatre, 28 Gibbs Street. While I have spoken for MLK Celebrations before, I count this as such a high honor in the city of Rochester as I have learned that most of the speakers have been the high powered folks from across the country and not local speakers. I guess its a couple of ways to look at that. I may not be fully considered a LOCAL speaker at this point, and secondly, the high powered people behind the MLK Jr Celebration are members of my church. LOL... So there you have it! It doesn't matter the reason, I an honored and humbled at the opportunity! As a result of this honor, I have a TV taping on Wednesday of which my personal Paparazzi will accompany me. (I have to tell you about my personal Paparazzi after I get this aching tooth out of my mouth) I can tell you now that it aint no joke, and its the real deal.. Don't think I'm just making something up now... OUCH..... A Sharp pain hit me somewhere... .I can't tell if its my tooth, my face, my head, or my eyes... maybe everything is hurting....You may be wondering why I up this time of morning.. One, I had to get some pain medicine one, and two, the house is quiet....and three, I know you will be here soon to see what's on my mind.. Ok.. Church was so good today! I love my church and they love me and its no question about it! I am most happy that my people are confident in knowing that I love them. That I do... Of course they could have found better preachers with more trimmings, you know education, bigger words, finer things, etc.. but they could would never find anyone who would love them anymore than I do.. I do love them unconditionally, but I also love them because they are WONDERFUL people who openly and consistently express their love for my family and me! I dont know what Tina was talking about when she asked, "What's Love Got to Do With it, Who needs a heart when a Heart can be broken...." Love has everything in the world to do with it; that is with Kingdom matters, and I guess thats not what Tina was referencing. Oh, did I tell you my son Rickey Jr sang a solo today... I was so proud of him. We got in the car and he wanted to beat himself up a bit for not doing his best; he counted the times that his voice cracked.. I'm like at least you can count the times you cracked, I crack so many times, I cant count them, and it doesnt bother me one bit, at this point, but I have been young and fully understand him. It was great, it was from his heart, he sounded good, he chose a wonderful song, and the church responded greatly! Amen.. Now if you saw me crying at church today, I am extremely moved when kids praise God, especially mine. I'm sorry, but that wears me and then I had to put him on the plane to leave me. He got on the plane at 5pm and called shortly after 11pm to announce his safe arrival. That's also another reason that I'm up.. A personal goal of mine from last 2008 was to do a recording in 2009.. I have one of the best choirs ever and happen to know one of the best song writers ever who knows the kind of songs that I can sing, as I get settled and get some of the weightier matters looked after, I may begin looking back into that recording situation. How does Reverend Rickey Harvey and the Mount Olivet Mass Choir Live" sound? Just as good as Reverend Clay Evans and the Fellowship Mass Choir if you ask me.... Well, dont start bugging me about that, yet, because we have so much other work to do, Inauguaration, Installation of Officers, Holy Week, Installation of Pastor, 2010 Church Anniversary Plans, but it is on the burner. Amen!

My Saint Paul - Memphis Trustee

I shall never forget the night of the pastoral election at Saint Paul Baptist Church, 1144 E. Mclemore Ave, September 25th, 1989 in Memphis, Tennessee. One reason being; my daughter was born that night! I left the hospital and got to the church after the election was over and the people had vacated the premises to find the chairman of the Trustee Board Mr Charles Sims Jr. anxious and excited to tell me that I had been elected by an unanimous vote to serve the Historic Saint Paul Baptist Church. Charles Sims Jr. was then and continues to be one of the most successful African American men that I have ever met in my life; and at this point, I have met many! He was probably the largest living member of the congregation and yet one of the most down to earth men ever. Charles Sims Jr. is a Certified Financial Planner and CEO of The Sims Financial Group, Inc. as well as an active member of the community. He has dedicated his life to helping individuals and businesses build their financial futures. Charles was responsible for the leading the St Paul Church in their Mortgage Burning Celebration when there was no pastor at the church. I am happy that through the medium of Facebook we reconnected after nearly 15 years or more. If I could have had a favorite member in Saint Paul Baptist Church it would have been Charles Sims Jr. I was 25 years old when elected and Charles Sims Jr. couldn't have been any more supportive if I was 65. I am happy to have connected with him tonight; it made me so happy and we will break bread together the latter part of this month when I'm in Memphis for the Mount Moriah East Baptist Church Super Sunday as featured speaker. More about that soon. After all of these years, Charles Sims Jr is still on top of his game and living for the Lord.

Im Feeling Better

You really have to doctor on yourself. The pain killers that I had intially; stopped working so I had to go to a different type. Nothing fancy, just some heavy strenghty Ibuprofens. They worked better than the Vicodin. I Got it now. The pain is under control. A rather large abscest grew on my gums and later it bursted; so my mouth was stuffed with cotton balls for the earlier part of the day. Now the toothache is pretty much gone, headache somewhat lingering but Im out tomorrow. I wanted to go to a little town called Albion and look at a Mastiff and St Bernard mixed puppy but my wife wouldn't let me go.. Im going to start standing up to her one of these days.. Tomorrow I have a couple of meetings to attend and Im looking forward to that! Also, its the first Sunday, the good folks of Mount Olivet will be in the house and Im looking forward to worship, sharing vision, getting on with the business that God has joined us together for. The Barack Obama Inauguration Celebration sponsored by my Church is going well. Folks are not only calling for tickets but for tables. If you want one; call the church quick. Its January 20th, 5:30pm at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Downtown Rochester. My Installation is the first Sunday in May... We are putting plans together for that! Its going to be wondeful....Folks are excited about it as I am too. 2010 is our Churches 100th Anniversary, and we have marvelous plans for the celebration already. Thanks for checking on me... Remember its my mouth thats sore, so dont call! LOL Just pray for me; email or text, but no one else call and ask how Im doing! LOL I will be fine... LOL Yall a mess!!!! :-)

Watchman What of the Night?

Jerusalem had men who protected the city called Watchmen. The Watchmen stood in the towers to gaze up into the horizon and give warning of any approaching dangers. One Watchman could not afford to watch all night long, it was necessary that a watchman be alert, on guard and at attention. They only watched for three hours at a time; and there were three different watches.
The First Watch was from six in the evening til nine at night,
The Second Watch was from nine to midnight,
The Third Watch was from Midnight to three in the morning,
The Fourth Watch was from three am until six am.
During the night, the citizens would shout out to the Watchman on the Wall, "Watchman, What of the Night?" In other words, "What time is it?" The Watchman would shout out, it is the 2nd Watch and that meant that it was somewhere between 9 and 12.
If he shouted out, it is the third Watch, that would mean somewhere between 12 and 3am.
This text was familiar to every Jew in Jerusalem. It was just as common for the Jews keeping up with time, as it is for us to look at our Watches and clocks to tell time. God uses this passage to give His people a Spiritual Message. Watchman, What of the Night was a question that the People of Seir would ask the Prophet in Jerusalem. What Time is it?
How much longer do we have to lay in wait?
How much more do we have to bear?
How long do we have to stay here and suffer?
Watchman, is Daybreak near?
Watchman, Do you see streaks of Daylight?
Watchman, is the day long from coming?
Watchman, What of the Night? What Time is it?
The Watchman shouted back, "The Morning Cometh,"
And that's What time it is with you who read this Blog,
The Morning Cometh...
You will be able to get up from where you are, The Morning Cometh,
You will be able to refresh yourselves, The Morning Cometh,
You will be able to feed your families,
You will be able to wear sufficient clothes,
You will have some sunny days, The Morning Cometh,
The Watchman declares, The Morning Cometh, But Also the Night!
In other words, in this life, its just normal, its fitting, its on point to let you know,
that even in 2009 with a Black President in the White House, and a Democratic Congress,
The Morning Cometh, But also the Night.
You WILL have some good days, but also,
You WILL have some bad days.
Into each life some rain must Fall,
Into each life some winds must BLOW...
Trust the Lord in the rain,
Trust the Lord in the wind,
For the Question; "Watchman, What of the Night?"
The answer is not in the Whitehouse,
The answer in not in the Courthouse,
The answer is in the Lord...
It's time to get on our knees and talk to God,
It's time to humble ourselves, and seek His face,
It't time to seek God's Face,
It's time to turn from our wicked ways.
Be Blessed in 2009, but dont let folks fool you in 2009 with all these catchy phrases,
Like "Its Mine in 2009" It may be or it may not be!
The Morning Cometh, But also the Night!

Nothing Opens til Monday

Wow... this toothache would come at a time when Dentist offices are closed for the holidays. We talked about Urgent Care, but what can they do for a toothache, other than give you prescriptions and charge you hundreds of dollars. Yvonne is giving me the best of care but somwhat mocking me at the same time for not having taken care of this matter a long time ago. I know I have some dental work to do. I have always said, as long as nothing hurts then there is nothing to do. My Dentist in Memphis is our family friend and she and Yvonne are like smirking. This is not funny. My tooth, gums, and the whole side of my face is aching....and I have a headache and my eyes are hurting. I'm going to continue this over the counter pain killers and rest tomorrow. Am I going to Church Sunday, Yes indeed... Im going Saturday as a matter of fact... and of course, its the first Sunday in the year, Yes I'm preaching... Looking forward to it... If a man can't take a little pain, he isn't a man... OOOOUUUCCCHHH......

A Throbbing Toothache

How I made it Tuesday night at the Gables Nursing Home with my choir is only with the strength and grace of God. Ok, the Dentist have been saying to me for over a decade that I have some teeth that need to come out! The mere fact that its been that long, is all the reason in the world that i didnt pay too much attention to them. I would simply get another Dentist, and they say the same thing.... but I refused to get a tooth pulled that wasnt hurting... Well, that booger is hurting so badly now that I can hardly see straight! My folks are trying to get me connected to a Dentist here in Rochester but right now everyone is closed until Monday. I accompanied my choir to the Gables Nursing Home Tuesday night and they brought the house down. A capacity filled room of Residents worshipped, wepted, waved, and expressed their gratituded toward God and for the nearly forty voices from Mount Olivet Tuesday, December 30th as they sang some eight songs or more. It was an awesome experience for me in two ways...Experiencing the worship which was wonderful and then dealing with the pain..... I thought I would pass out a couple of times; my tooth is aching, and my face is hurting, and dont laugh or say funny things about my face hurting, it is! I considered the Urgent Care, but got home ok and I'm making it on pain pills. When the Dentist in Rochester meets me, he/she wont have to beg me to get this tooth pulled... Pull it! Now! In the meantime, I'm resting today.... And Tomorrow!
